Presenters
- Chip Conley is a rebel hospitality entrepreneur and New York Times bestselling author who disrupted his favorite industry... twice. At age 26, he founded Joie de Vivre Hospitality (JdV), transforming an inner-city motel into the second largest boutique hotel brand in America. He sold JdV after running it as CEO for 24 years, and soon the young founders of Airbnb asked him to help transform their promising start-up into the world’s leading hospitality brand. Chip served as Airbnb’s Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy for four years and today acts as the company’s Strategic Advisor for Hospitality and Leadership. His five books have made him a leading authority at the intersection of psychology and business. Chip was awarded “Most Innovative CEO” by the San Francisco Business Times, is the recipient of hospitality’s highest honor, the Pioneer Award, and holds a BA and MBA from Stanford University.
- Shaun Paul has 30 years of experience in private finance, philanthropy, and international rural development, leading and supporting the creation and growth of dozens of innovative for-profit and non-profit companies, catalyzing well-being for people and the planet. He currently serves as CEO of Ejido Verde, named Fast Company’s #2 Most Innovative Company in Latin America, a Mexican forestry company formed through a partnership of the pine chemicals industry and Indigenous communities in Michoacán to reforest 12,000 hectares for pine resin extraction. He grew a 1000-person workforce to restore and protect forests, along with structuring and securing $50 million of investments.
- Alex Pryor is co-founder of Guayaki Sustainable Rainforest Products, Inc. Guayaki is an Argentine and US company that exports yerba mate, a kind of tea, to the US but its real aims are ‘social transformation and the environmental restoration of the rainforest’. Though it operates in classic non-profit territory, it’s a business, if an unusual one – one indicator Guayaki uses to measure its performance is the number of species of birds found in its growing areas. Alex decided to use commercial means to achieve social and environmental ends stemmed partly from his qualms about the pure profit motive of business and his fear that foundation money sometimes comes from questionable sources.
- Eduard Müller, Convener, is founder and president of the University for International Cooperation and leads the Regenerate Costa Rica initiative.
