Our present moment is not one of control but chaos, which is something quite scary for those of us who have been trained to appreciate order, or instructed to wait for directions from the one in charge.  Project Adapt believes each of us has an essential role to play in the liberation of our minds, our coming together for shared action, and the co-creation of a way of being that embraces change, weathers despair, sources from love and acts without the guarantee of success.  In July, 2018, Jem Bendell published the paper, “Deep Adaptation: A Map for Navigating Climate Tragedy.”  The paper goes beyond the familiar climate mitigation conversations and compellingly calls his readers into a different territory: acceptance.  When we are in a place of accepting the societal collapse already visible in varying degrees, then how might we more creatively prepare for, and proactively respond to the disruption, grief, and loss that’s inevitable?

Project Adapt convenes those who wish to embody the practice of the 4 Rs of Deep Adaptation: Resilience, Relinquishment, Restoration and Reconciliation, plus one more: Reverence.  Please join Project Adapt for this session as we explore what each of these R's might look like in your life and/or community.  This session will feature voices from the Project Adapt team as well as a few who have participated in a training last Fall (To be introduced at the session).

Convener:

  • Robert Rees is Visiting Professor and Director of Mormon Studies at Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. He has taught at UCLA, UC Santa Cruz, UC Berkeley, and Vytautas Magnus University in Lithuania where he was a Fulbright Professor of American Studies (1995-96). He has long been involved in interfaith work, including in relation to climate issues. He is the co-founder and current Vice-President of the Bountiful children’s Foundation, a humanitarian organization that addresses children’s malnutrition in the developing world.  Email: bobrees2@gmail.com
