This is the second of six sessions exploring many different aspects of manhood and masculinity as our culture painstakingly moves beyond patriarchy. In our last session, we discussed “The New Man of Wisdom and Heart,” a description of how men can learn to act virtuously while meeting the current challenges of society. We discussed the systematic impacts of hierarchy, patriarchy, and the domination model that has been a feature of Western Society for millennia.

Patriarchy is not men over women, nor masculine over feminine, but rather a few men at the top ruling over and controlling the lives of most men and women beneath them. Both men and women have been subjugated and used by this culture of domination, which Riane Eisler has described accurately – a culture that values material and matter over people and relationships. A new vision of men and masculinity is being born, which she calls partnership culture.

Because of the current state of politics, policing, and racism in our society, especially here in the United States, in the era of the Derek Chauvin trial and conviction, it is important to get the perspective of men who are Black to understand more deeply the experience of 18.5% of the men in the U.S.

In 1961, author James Baldwin said: "To be a Negro in this country - and to be relatively conscious - is to be in a state of rage almost all of the time. And part of the rage is this: It isn't only what is happening to you - it's what's happening all around you and all of the time in the face of the most extraordinary and criminal indifference and ignorance on the part of most white people in this country. It's a great temptation to simplify the issues - under the illusion that if you simplify them enough, people will recognize them. I think this illusion is very dangerous because, in fact, it isn't the way it works. A complex thing can't be made simple. You simply have to try to deal with it in all its complexity - and hope to get that complexity across.”
