Some Fifteen presenters representing South Asia (Himalayas), South America (Andes) and North America (4-5 bioregions) and pluri-areas of eco-cultural engagements gather to highlight their unique approaches to regenerating abundance. The session starts with six presenters offering their own invocations for the EarthDay/GaiaDay/BiosphereDay. To be followed by 7 other presentations that illustrate regenerative imagining, dreaming, designing and acting in diverse bio-geographies from Himalayas to Venezuela, from Barichara in Colombia to Northern California.
Annapurna Pluriversities seeks to prepare a new generation of regenerative educators and leaders, dreamers and designers in such bio-culturally diverse bio-geographies and networks. Annapurna is the mountain range in mid-Nepal, Anna (meaning grain) and Purna (meaning full harvest, or abundance). The symbolic theme of the Annapurna (considered the goddess of fertility and abundance) is evoked to create models of cultivating and learning regenerative abundance. Pluriversity (instead of university or multiversity) is preferred to recognize the pluri-species assemblages (all more than human species) in the theatre of learning and co-creating regenerative abundance. The mission of Annapurna Pluriversities is: Regenerating the Right Relationship between the BioSphere, EthnoSphere, LearningSphere and LeadershipSphere
During these tumultuous times of CCCs, the content as well as the processes of pluriversities will be to build on and enhance the massive and deep work of regenerating “soil-carbon-water-climate-web,” or “soil-food-nutrition-health web” and the “wood-wide web.” We cultivate and cross-pollinate emergent learning webs and leadership webs around the bioregions, watersheds, foodsheds, seedsheds, energysheds and more. However, humans alone cannot do this. A new regenerative curriculum and work will need to engage “companion species” and create “pluri-species assemblages.” Such co-regenerating fellow species could be a very art of harvesting, retaining and water in the Himalayan slopes, the abundantly found bamboo grass, a raindrop, the morning dew and fog along the river valleys in the Himalayas or Rio Arriba; a pollinator, a mycorrhizal fungal network, a bio-char, soil-carbon microbes, grasslands, or wetlands.
Presenters:
- Pramod Parajuli, PhD, is Founder and Executive Director of Annapurna Pluriversities (www.annapurnaPlus.org), professor Parajuli is also the co-designer and Founding Faculty of the Doctoral Program on Visionary Practice and Regenerative Leadership, SouthWestern College, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. Born and raised in the Nepalese Himalayam foothills, Pramod is a prolific writer and thought leader in pedagogical, social and applied sciences. He is co-editor of the book, Religion and Sustainable Agriculture: World Spiritual Traditions and Food Ethic (University of Kentucky Press, October 2016).
- Brian Rice, PhD, is a professor (at University of Manitoba, Canada), a cultural performer, a thought leader and a life-long activist/educator of/on North American Indigenous peoples, cultures, and governance, Dr Rice is a member of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy. As part of his doctorate on Traditional knowledge from the California Institute of Integral Studies, he traveled to all of the important cultural and historical places within the story of the Kayeneren: kowa Great Law of Peace. With depth of understanding on indigenous forms of governance, Dr. Rice also directed an Indigenous governance program at the University of Manitoba, as well developed the Indigenous Global Religions for the Religions and Culture Department at The University of Winnipeg
- Kathryn Langstaff is Co-founder of autopoiesis, llc and founder of Yanapanakusunchis, E.I.R.L. Kathryn is a catalyst, social entrepreneur, and partner who enjoys bringing renewed forms of culture to life in harmony with living systems. Kathryn will offer Earth Day greetings from a Quechua allyu of the Peruvian Andes to bless and honor all the sacred waters of life. Jeremias Chacon Arahuallapa is a Quechua youth and Yanapanakusunchis, E.I.R.L. collaborator whose visual imagery captures the sacredness and beauty of the Wilkamayu River basin and the Quechua people. He is committed to protecting the rights of the river and its people. Kathryn is working to ensure that cultural practices are supported to flourish in harmony with Pachamama and the sacred river, Wilkamayu, bounded by Cusco and Machu Picchu, including access to clean water, preventing soil erosion, growing food free of pollutants and the improvement of health and well-being in these Quechua communities as its glacier to river cultural landscapes are stabilized and become regenerative.
- Felipe Medina is an eco-cultural regenerative educator with deep roots in the Columbian Andes and a magnanimous heart, Felipe is a uniquely gifted youth representing the dreams and designs of his generation. Felipe brings a kin-centric, and a soul-foul approach to the regenerative peacebuilding in Colombia work and builds on his wide travels to the Andean, and Amazonian bio-regions throughout South America. He has had apprenticeship with indigenous elders there and is bringing those skills in his regenerative work in peacebuilding as well as bio-cultural regeneration. Felipe and his whole young family (wife Alejandra Camargo and four young children) are as much educators of children and youth as they are for the adults.
- Shivani Adhikari is the director and team-leader at the Jagrati Swayam Sahayta Group, a women self-help group based in village of Majkhali, district Almora, Uttarakhand, India. Recognized for its role in innovative leadership pedagogy, the Sahayata group received the ICIMOD mountain Prize (2020). The women organized themselves into a group in 2011 in order to collaborate with the Foundation for Contemplation of Nature, Majkhali and invite students from all over the world to experience life in the village. They offer residential courses on Resilient Leadership in the Himalayas to university students, so that students can experience first-hand how a traditional lifestyle is a holistic skillset and mindset that can inform all aspects of modern life. Since 2011, the group and the foundation has offered more than 30 2-week long immersive courses to over 500 students from across the world. Since 2018 the course has been recognized as a semester credit course by the School of Sustainability Studies, Western Colorado University.
- Seth Watson Quigg, MA, is International Explorer. Educator. Photographer. Humanitarian. Outdoor Enthusiast. As a visionary, networker, and explorer I am driven to assist students, guests, and all peoples to a life filled with learning, cultural understanding, and personal growth. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate enough to lead thousands of individuals into novel environments that inspire interpersonal and intra-personal skills, leading to self discovery and further awareness of the world. I am owner of an International adventure company called Mountains By Nature, sister company of Water By Nature. We lead incredible hiking, mountain climbing and land based adventures throughout the United States and World.
- Nancy Mildren has embraced and actualized the heart, and the soul of regeneration inside out as a Yoga teacher, a dancer, a baker, a gardener, a long-distance runner, and an artist (ceramics and painting). With childhood roots in the Greatlakes bioregion, Nancy has immersed herself in the Oregonian coast where she also ran New Morning Bakery in Corvallis for 8 years with a talented core team of culinary artists. As leadership responsibilities demand renewal to live a balanced life, she also immersed in the classical hatha yoga at the Iyengar Institute of San Francisco. From teaching yoga at the Yoga Center of Corvallis, Oregon to helping children and youth unleash artistic creativity at Waldorf school, Nancy’s biggest heart garden spirals from raising a family to cultivating the community of humans and all other species. Deepened with passion, values and skillfulness, for Nancy, being, becoming and belonging are in deep cosmic continuum.
- Ajay Rastogi (Regenerative work on the Indian Himalayas) is Co-founder & Director of Foundnature.org. One of the notable emergent regenerative educators from India, Ajay Rastogi is the founder member of the Foundnature Foundation and has established the Vrikshalaya Himalayan Centre in the village Majkhali, Almora, Uttrakhand, India. He is a philosopher, multicultural educator, a writer and applied ethics practitioner with extensive experience working across the fields of environment, agriculture, livelihoods and ethical business practice. Recipient of the South Asia Youth Leaders Award, European Union Erasmus Mundus Fellowship in Applied Ethics, and the Nehru-Fulbright Environmental Leadership Award for Contemplative Education, Ajay is also certified yoga teacher and a contemplative practitioner.
- Megh Ale is Founder-President, BOARDERLANDS-Leadership School and Nepal River Conservation Trust (NRCT).Ashoka Fellow (2007)Megh is respected as a leading ecological activist, tourism entrepreneur, and thought leader for Himalayan River restoration. A effective pubic speaker and a media-person, Mr. Ale has articulated the notion of “New Nepalism,” which anticipates Nepal’s global leadership based on the message of Gautam Buddha on peace and ecological regeneration. One of Megh Ale’s major work is leading the transdisciplinary, 3-countries (China/Tibet, Nepal and India) Scientific Expedition team on the Karnali River which covered 1,080 Kilometers and in 44-days. - Adam Sgrenci is Founder and Executive Director of Center for Infrastructure and Society (CIS), a think tank and incubator dedicated to pushing the construction industry beyond its own barriers. Adam began his career early on as an immigrant rights advocate and social worker. He discovered his love for construction soon after while studying for his Masters in International Relations. After spending two decades in the industry as a carpenter, contractor, superintendent and operations manager, he finally found a way to bring his diverse interests and purpose together under one roof. Operating with a fast-growing network at CIS, he gets to spend his time designing and implementing solutions to the world's built environment challenges with students, tech firms, construction CSRs and international project developers.
- Anil Bhattarai, PhD, is one of the visible and respected grassroots educators and thought-leaders of grassroots initiatives throughout South Asia, Anil is also a highly diligent and self-motivated information technology professional. After completing his doctoral degree from Department of Geography and Planning at the University of Toronto (2019), he has self-taught himself and has been designing and building full stack web applications. A fast learner with a child-like enthusiasm for learning who acquired intermediate to advanced level competence in two human languages (French and Spanish) and two computer languages (JavaScript and Python) in the last two years (mid-2018 – 2021). At Annapurna Pluriversities, he will further enrich his interest in working with grassroots initiatives, particularly contributing its design and delivery in the areas of web design, research and documentation around issues of climate change, water, ecological housing and shelter and ecological food systems.
- Mary Felicia Jackson, PhD, A faculty and Program Coordinator for the Outdoor Education Leadership at Prescott College, Mary is an interdisciplinary academic, writer and artist. Mary is interested in the entanglement of seemingly disparate ideas and how they smash together and then separate, but forever connected by that coming together. Her academic and professional work integrate adventure and outdoor education, sustainable tourism, and women's human rights and empowerment. As a visual artist, she emphasizes a theoretical approach of new materialist and posthumanist methodologies, examining concepts of embodied experience and process in both oil and watercolor paintings. - Kristen Sbrogna, PhD, is an educator, writer, and activist working at the intersection of social justice, community engagement, and sustainability leadership. Dr. Sbrogna teaches at Saint Mary’s College of California and Prescott College, and in 2015 founded Leaderful Strategies, a consulting practice focused on nonprofit cultural arts and sustainability organizations. Recently her research has focused on developing a biocultural framework for crop transition in Northern California. Originally from Worcester, MA, Dr. Sbrogna lives in the San Francisco East Bay with her partner, three children, and hundreds of other species
- Sagarika Bhatta is an Environment Science and Management postgraduate from Nepal. She is a climate justice advocate, researcher, academic tutor, environmental preservationist and entrepreneur. She is also the chairperson and founder of PowerShift Nepal and ERST-We Care Nepal (ww.nepalwecare.com). She has been conducting research and publishing articles, and was both a former Climate Tracker 2016 Fellow and participant in the Asia Climate Leadership Camp 2019. She is also Korean green grants recipient. She is the first solo women traveler of Nepal.
