Politicians keep promising to increase our “national security.” Actually, the “national security” slogan is simplistic, limited, and deceptive. Usually, it is a glib euphemism for a bigger military and more weapons. It totally ignores what nation's need in order to become truly secure. Actually, the U.S.’s violent foreign policy has actually made the US LESS secure by making other nations suffer, antagonizing people into wanting to retaliate against the U.S., and distorting our national budget by funding military violence and failing to fund what we really need: ending poverty, protecting the environment, providing health care for everyone.
Governments, news media and the public worldwide need to seriously and open-mindedly re-think what “national security” should really mean. Our traditional assumptions about “national security” are simplistic, unethical, and have failed us. A peaceful and just foreign policy would make all nations and our world much more safe and secure.
In this session, we will hear from Glen Anderson who has devoted his life since the 1960s to working as a volunteer for peace, nonviolence, social justice, and progressive political issues. He has volunteered individually and through a variety of non-profit organizations. Over the years he has worked especially for such wide-ranging goals as making peace with Vietnam, abolishing nuclear weapons [[Category:Issue-Nuclear Weapons]], converting from a military economy to a peacetime economy, protecting the environment and climate, working for various social and economic issues (such as abolishing the death penalty), and promoting nonviolence at all levels throughout society. He writes, speaks, and conducts training workshops on a wide variety of topics, such as how to help people build strategically smart and effective nonviolent grassroots movements for whatever issues his students care about.
