In this second NextGen installment, Ubiquity's NextGen Team will hear from four of our international NextGen Leaders who are working on a variety of different projects from around the world. We will learn about initiatives related to virtual reality activism, sustainable at-home energy consumption, and sustainable infrastructure engineering taking place in Amsterdam, Eswatini, the United States, and beyond.
Participants:
1. Judith Joan-Walker, Africa Clean Energy
Judith Joan Walker is the COO of African Clean Energy (ACE), a company manufacturing clean energy products including the ACE 1 Solar Biomass Cookstove. Through ACE she is focused on proving new techniques and best practices for distributing RE technologies that put the focus on excellent customer services and accurate data collection in order to create replicable methods of distribution to underserved populations. Judith was named 2016 Forbes Top 30 Under 30 European Social Entrepreneur, the Winner of the Chivas Venture Netherlands 2017, a finalist for the Ashden Awards 2017 for the ‘Clean Energy and Women & Girls’ category, a Global Finalist in the 2017 Global Inclusion Awards and is a GSBI Alumna.
2. Romain Vaktilibar, Founder Pathos Labs
Romain spends my life at the nexus of media and behavior change. Founded in 2016, Pathos Labs was conceptualized to serve as a laboratory, where different media interventions, rooted in the latest research, would be tested to assess the role that media and technology can play in engineering new norms that predispose us to compassion over divisiveness, to nuance over oversimplification. Structuring Pathos as a laboratory gives us permission to dare greatly, where at the worst – we add to the body of knowledge, and at the best - we set a precedent for what’s possible.
3. Sam Sweet, Founder Eswatini Bridge Program
Sam is a recently-graduated civil engineering student from the University of Colorado Boulder and one of the founders of the Eswatini bridge-building program. He joined CU’s chapter of Bridges to Prosperity as a sophomore with hopes of utilizing his engineering education to make a positive difference in the world. After experiencing the need for bridges in Africa and building his first bridge in Bolivia in 2016, he got the bridge bug and became the leader of the Swazi Program. Against all odds, Sam led the CU team to successfully complete the first project in Eswatini in 2017.
