Some hopeful good news -- of three-dozen proposed gigantic atomic reactors proposed under the Bush/Cheney nuclear power renaissance (relapse), only 2 are still under construction -- Vogtle 3 & 4 in Georgia. They are 100% overbudget (the price tag has doubled from $7.5 billion per reactor, to $15 billion per reactor, and still counting), and is many long years behind schedule.

Re coal - coal mining country in KY and WVa has been being hit by torrential rains from trains of storms. Flooding over mining areas not only hammer the homes in nearby communities where miners live, they destroy infrastructure - valley streams rip out bridges and tear the edges off of roads, water and sewer systems get overwhelmed, and the strip mined areas bleed all kinds of toxins into the waterways too. Some of these valleys may become uninhabitable, some of these mines may become even more unsafe due to flooding issues, too.

Its the cost of fission power that kills it! So that's what to focus on. What we did was to get huge urban areas to refuse to indenture themselves and their rate and tax payers to buying the fission electric power so that without big cities guaranteeing purchase of the power over many decades, then the typical cost overruns for building these fission reactors would never be covered, and the international investors go scared off.
