Giving Thanks Then and Now: Pandemics, Gratitude, Transformation

We will be exploring a balanced telling of the circumstances surrounding the extraordinary time of loss, peace and synthesis 400 years ago with descendants of the Pokanoket Wampanoags and the Mayflower Pilgrims whose ancestors shared the 3-day harvest celebration now called "The First Thanksgiving.” Barbara Mary Kurfis who is a Clan Grandmother of the Pokanoket and a Mayflower Pilgrim descendant will join Connie Baxter Marlow, Mayflower Pilgrim descendant, and authors and independent scholars Andrew Cameron Bailey and Betty Booth Donohue to share their personal and cultural stories and perspectives.  Lesley Southwick-Trask of Humanity Rising will facilitate the discussion.

Panelists

  • Barbara Mary Kurfis, Clan Grandmother of the Pokanoket Wampanoag walks in two worlds. Her native name is Wamsutta. She is descended from Quadaquina the brother of the Massasoit, great sachem of the Pokanoket. She is also descended from Stephen Hopkins, Mayflower Pilgrim. Both of these ancestors attended the 3-day harvest celebration in 1621. As Clan Grandmother Barbara teaches the many different ways of her people. Barbara was raised in the dominant culture and discovered at 10 years old that she was of Native descent. She was intrigued and drawn to discovering her ancestors and learning and sharing Native ways.
  • Dr. Betty Booth Donohue (Cherokee Nation) is an independent scholar who resides in Oklahoma.  She is the author of Bradford's Indian Book:  Being the True Roote & Rise of American Letters as Revealed by the Native Text Embedded in Of Plimoth Plantation. She has also published works on the Indigenous American Oral Tradition and on Nineteenth-Century Native Poetry. The focus of her work is the influence of Native American poetics on the formation of American literature.
  • Andrew Cameron Bailey and Connie Baxter Marlow are authors, filmmakers and futurists who share an uplifting vision of the future of humanity. Their book THE TRUST FREQUENCY: Ten Assumptions for a New Paradigm and film IN SEARCH OF THE FUTURE: What do the Wise Ones Know? bring together indigenous cosmology, quantum science and Eastern and Western mysticism to present tools for walking in balance with Universal Law with an open heart. In their First Fifty Years Project Connie and Andrew present discoveries and conclusions drawn from many years spent with visionary indigenous elders and from their extensive research into the Pilgrim story. They focus on the fifty-four years of peace and friendship between the Mayflower Pilgrims and the Pokanoket Wampanoags in Plymouth Colony between 1621 and 1675. Their work also addresses the turbulent history of native New England before the Mayflower. Andrew was born in England and raised in South Africa. He has written a 21st Century historical mystery novel/screenplay The Mayflower Revelations that brings forth a healing perspective on the inter-cultural friendship in Plimoth Plantation in an entertaining, enlightening and inspiring way. The novel contains an Appendix, The Pandemic that Transformed America, a well-researched article on Andrew’s theory concerning the pandemic that decimated the New England indigenous population between the years 1616 and 1618. Read the Preface and Appendix to The Mayflower Revelations HERE.
  • Connie is a Mayflower Pilgrim descendant whose insights come from her experiences over 30 years with visionary Native American elders and her resonance to the driving impulse of her Pilgrim ancestors – self-determination and the right to act according to our conscience. She sees the spiritual alignment of the Mayflower “Separatists” and the Native Americans they encountered upon their arrival in America as the spiritual origin of the United States. Connie is the producer/narrator of the film SEEDS OF FREEDOM: A Vision for America that addresses the syntheses between the Europeans and Native Americans that gave birth to the American mind, spirit and democracy. Watch the 25-minute film HERE.
  • Lesley Southwick-Trask is a cultural anthropologist specializing in global transformation. As a strategist, Lesley has led large-scale transformational initiatives in over 500 organizations and communities where she has integrated the evolutionary sciences with U Theory to create breakthrough pathways for regeneration.  She is currently the Chief Development Officer with Ubiquity University as the enterprise evolves into a network orchestrator for global regeneration.
