Mercenary armies are now very large and unregulated. The Treaty of Westphalia restricted lethal force to the authority of the nation states — at a time of considerable suffering from mercenary forces which often “go rogue.” But we seem to be ignoring that aspect of the Treaty of Westphalia.

All the stuff I've been doing all day will probably get us nowhere but - I have to have faith. We COULD do so much. Perhaps the triumphalism stemming from the false narrative around WWI could be countered by truth regarding the pandemic of 1918. That flu most likely started in Kansas. Basic public health was ignored because of military objectives and doughboys spread it throughout the world, killing far more that the war. Noncombatants far from the battlefields died 25-50 million.

Biden could sell this to the nation to in a peaceful means of dealing with China in a peaceful way, although “dealing with” is too strong and confrontational. Biden wants to look strong, Republicans will attack him no matter what, so let him just do the right thing.

Joseph, it's not JUST old white men... It's the weapon industry that is so very in charge. Yes most of the people at the head of weapon maker companies are old white men, but it's broader, and it has support from everyone who want to make a killing in stocks by owning shared in the military industrial complex... even many foreign share holders.

American universities have lost their focus on liberal arts education and the study of western civilization via the humanities. Students should be taught how the USA is following in the footsteps of the Roman Empire. The Romans expanded their militarism from London to the Middle East (& beyond). The result: the empire ended in collapse.
