I’m listening while tending my almost 2 year old grandson. We held an initiation for his father and his friend — they both treasure that memory. Also I want to shout out YMCA Camp Widjiwagan ::https://www.ymcanorth.org/camps/camp_widjiwagan:: which offers developmentally appropriate wilderness trekking for both boys and , separately, girls. Now paused by the pandemic, but that was also a great boon to our family.

YES so few people seem to understand how powerful that realization is for boys and there is NO support for dealing with that realization. They can be angry, hurt, so many options and I believe that impacts their relationship to women for the rest of their life.

When I was 13 years old I had what is now referred to as a transcendental experience. Such things were not recognised in my (UK, white) culture. Except by one person who said to me that if I was in an indigenous culture, a Native American / First Nation culture it would be recognised as a sign for my Vision Quest - the rite of passage from childhood to adulthood. I always thought about that and said to myself "one day'...". That one day turned out to be 50 years later when I undertook a 4 day and night Vision Quest, solo, 10,000 feet up in the mountains of Utah. After a day and a half of guidance.
It changed my life. We have NO similar experience in my culture and I don't think we ever have. Tomorrow I will spend a day in a Heart Of Fire ceremony carrying of with the tradition.
Part of the guidance for the Quest is that "the purpose of the Quest is not to find personal release or ecstasy, but to find the power and wisdom in oneself to serve others".
